For its next high-end smartphone, Asus faces a major dilemma: switch to MediaTek or push the ZenFone 4 release date.
What happens when competitors have access to available components in very limited quantities, some months before the release of their flagship ? This is the dilemma facing Asus in believing a recent report.
Asus is beginning to be affected by the supply problems facing Qualcomm for its latest chip, the Snapdragon 835. It refuses to adopt the same strategy as LG, to equip its flagship phone with a chip of last year , the Snapdragon 821 (which is an optimization of the 820).
The choices of the Taiwanese manufacturer are therefore rather small. It must wait for the second batch of the latest Qualcomm chips, which means delaying the release of Zenfone 4 and losing potential market shares, or maintaining its forecast schedule and switching to the competition.
MediaTek: savior or spare wheel?
Asus is seriously considering buying from Qualcomm’s competitor MediaTek. The decision is not yet taken, but the day of presentation of the Zenfone 4 is fast approaching, which puts Asus in an uncomfortable situation.
If Asus decides to buy from MediaTek, there is no doubt that it will equip the ZenFone 4 with a Helio X30, the most powerful chip of the Taiwanese founder. Engraved in 10 nm, like the Snapdragon 835, it should offer performance sufficiently for the users.
An out of stock orchestrated?
The Snapdragon 835 is a chip of promise. And it’s not the Windows 10 porting on it that will make us lie. It is undoubtedly the most coveted Qualcomm chip since the Snapdragon 810 failed.
And Samsung took advantage of its position as a partner to negotiate with Qualcomm a large share of production for the very promising Samsung Galaxy S8 . Xiaomi could also have done better by negotiating with Qualcomm to be served among the first manufacturers. Xiaomi can rely on its sales history to seduce Qualcomm, which is forced to drop its other customers, time to compose a second production.
One way of doing it is to avoid competition in short.
